THE SHOW MUST GO ON

When Dark Alley Media’s Matthias Von Fistenburg set out to make “reality porn” in The Show, getting arrested wasn’t what he had in mind.

As the co-founder of Manhattan upstart gay porn company with like-minded dirty-minded pal Owen Hawk, Dark Alley Media’s Matthias Von Fistenburg set out to stake his claim in the industry as a big-budget “reality porn” production house boasting some of the hottest studs on the East Coast—establishing himself as a menace to society an old-fashioned family values wasn’t one of his goals.

Just try telling that to the New Rochelle Police Department, though. On January 31, Von Fistenburg and the cast and crew of DAM’s latest flick The Show were interrupted mid-coitus by the men in blue and Von Fistenburg ended up carried away in cuffs. But as anyone familiar with Von Fistenburg will tell you, the international connoisseur of filth isn’t one to take things lying down (at least when it comes to respect). We tuned in for a chat with the criminal recreationalist to find out more.

What made you decide to create your own porn company Dark Alley Media? I used to produce contemporary classical music, but when I came to America I found nobody was interested in it, so I decided to do something fun and saw that after September 11, the only industry that didn’t suffer was porn. I wanted to make high-quality, big-budget productions. I’d done around 10 or 15 movies for different directors, but every time I did them I’d be thinking, “I can do this so much better myself.” I never liked the primitive stop-and-go approach of California-style productions—everything was pretend.

That’s interesting. How much “pretending” happens in gay porn?Everything that’s not a clear penetration shot is fake. Our movies are completely different—we do a four-camera edit and record everything as it happens, so we don’t have to fake facial reactions or pretend to fuck.

Dark Alley’s first release, Mutiny, came out one year ago. What have you learned in the time since? As I director, I learned never to allow a performer to say more than three lines! What we tried to do with The Show was to get actors who are normally very uncomfortable speaking in front of the camera to act natural by putting them in ironic situations.

I took all these fags from Harlem and some California boys and put them in sleek rubber outfits—something they’d never wear—and made them walk down a catwalk in front of everybody and do something sexy. It was a new experience for them and something they thought they’d never do. We filmed it all as they did it and filmed the interviews directly afterward, so they didn’t have to act; they were just talking about how they felt and it came out so natural and unconstrained. They really got into it!

You’re billing The Show as “reality porn” and it’s set up like a reality show. What’s the plot? The concept is that there’s this rich guy who wants to find a “pet” for the year—a guy he’s going to give a monthly allowance and travel around the world with on his private jet—and these guys come to his mansion to compete.

Where did you find the mansion?It belongs to some doctor in New York City—we found it under “Vacation Rentals” on Craigslist! Supposedly the guy can’t rent it out anymore sicne we got arrested!

Let’s talk about that arrest—what happened? We were filming
the last scene in the movie in which I’m having sex with the winner of the competition and suddenly I saw this guy with a police badge walking in!

What did he say? They charged us with Lewd Conduct and Filming Without a Permit. They dropped the charge for Filming Without a Permit and we ended up hiring a lawyer and cutting a deal and paying a $100 fine. The system is set up in a way where you have to hire a lawyer and come to court 10 times and maybe you can prove you’re not guilty, so when a lawyer tells you he can strike a deal and you can walk out of here for $100 if you say you’re guilty, that’s really the only option.

Do you think you were treated differently because you were gay? All the [police] were straight and they were having a field day—“Ha-ha—we arrested these gay porn stars!” Everybody had a laugh about it. They wanted to have fun at our expense, so I thought I’d have some fun at their expense and see how they react and make them uncomfortable, so when they asked what we were doing, I told them what we were doing—I told this straight [police officer] that I was just fucking this black guy and we had a lot of fun and his ass was wide open! He was trying to write the report and his face turned red when I said, “You guys interrupted us just before the cum shots—you should have gotten here a little later!”

Was there anything hot about the whole experience? Well, I did jerk off in the cell! I thought, “I have to get back at these guys somehow!” [Laughs.] I thought, “Why not just turn this into a sexual fantasy?” So
I was thinking about jail sex and I jerked off in the cell.

Did you finish filming The Show? I got out of jail six hours later and told everybody that we had to get back to work! We went back to the mansion, got into the same setup and filmed the rest of the scene.
Did this whole experience teach you anything? Now I know I should have the name and phone number of my attorney memorized! The second thing I learned is that the only thing I should ever tell the police is my attorney’s name and number!

Did your time in jail inspire any future Dark Alley movies? Yes, actually! Our next movie, Recon, is going to be about guys having kinky sex and the police arresting them and putting them in jail for it.

I’m sure the New Rochelle Police Department will be thrilled. On my way out, I did ask them if they rented the place out for movies—they said no.

The always-controversial Michael Lucas ignited another debate at a New York Virgin Megastore event last week. Virgin hosted several porn actors from Lucas Entertainment on 22 June when a member of the audience questioned Lucas who has the biggest dick. Lucas promptly replied that his new recruit, Ben Andrews, was better hung, causing a tirade of defenses from the humiliated Chad Hunt. Chad Hunt, who has reigned as the most hung actor, sent Lucas an e-mail the next day re-iterating the comparison they had a month prior confirming Hunt was bigger by half an inch though admitting Andrews is thicker and has foreskin. He clarified that Ben is 12 years younger versus the 15 years Lucas claimed and essentially called it quits with Lucas.

Unwilling to back down, Lucas even set up a poll on a new site WhoIsBigger.com for viewers to rate from photos Lucas selected. 71% voted for Ben Andrews while 29% thinks Chad Hunt is bigger.
