Gay Porn Capital - San Francisco

Hub of all that’s hot

San Francisco — surprise! — has surpassed Los Angeles as the capital of the gay adult entertainment industry
Wyatt Buchanan, Chronicle Staff Writer

Friday, February 23, 2007

To the list of accolades that make San Francisco the gayest city around, you can add this: world headquarters of the gay adult entertainment industry.

Over the past few years the core of that industry has shifted from Los Angeles to San Francisco, and nearly every leading studio that makes gay adult content now is centered in the city, mainly in the South of Market and lower Potrero Hill neighborhoods.

The content of the industry — that is, the movies themselves — has also shifted, from DVDs and videotapes to the Internet, and to the city at the forefront of that medium. If you download gay porn from the Web, there is a good chance that the images are coming from servers sitting in the shadows of AT&T Park.

This weekend, both transitions will be acknowledged as the GAYVN Awards — the Oscars of the genre — take place at the Castro Theatre on Saturday night and bring the entire industry, including its stars, to the city.

The event, where awards in 38 categories will be presented, is for the first time open to the public, as all eight previous ceremonies were industry-only affairs in Los Angeles nightclubs.

Buttressing that main event is a first-ever industry conference at the W Hotel and a string of parties, one of which — Colt Studio’s 40th anniversary party — will take place across the street from City Hall tonight.

Observers say these events are major changes in the multimillion-dollar industry.

“It certainly shows an acceptance of gay sexuality, but it also shows an increasing acceptance of pornography as a form of popular culture,” said Jeffrey Escoffier, a New York writer who lived in San Francisco for 15 years and is writing a history of the industry to be published next spring.

The owner of the 1961 Fellini classic La Dolce Vita has filed a suit against the always controversial Michael Lucas (real name Andrei Treivas Bregman) for trademark and copyright infringement by the movie of the same title released in December by Lucas Entertainment. Owner Michael Lucas brushed off the lawsuit as frivolous claiming that “Nobody can be confused and think they’re buying Fellini’s movie by buying mine.” In an interesting coincidence, Michael Lucas issued a press release, the same day this lawsuit was filed, announcing that he’s legally changed his name to Michaelangelo Antonioni.

I openly admit that I am biased against bareback films and therefore I limit bareback news to a minimum. I believe that as a public medium, I have a responsibility to readers about keeping the bareback happenings in check because I believe that prevalence leads to acceptance; barebacking (unless with monogamous partner) is still not acceptable until we find a cure for HIV. We all know that barebacking has been rising in in porn and in gay men’s sex lives but it doesn’t make it any less dangerous. Secondly, most twinky or real raunchy bareback actors are just not my type and so I have no interest in following their news.

In order to stem the loss of sales to bareback studios, Raging Stallion director Chris Ward just announced that he has invented a way in which condoms will be invisible to the naked eye in their certain scenes of upcoming films. Raging Stallion has the capabililty to make condoms invisible as major Hollywood studios edit out unwanted objects. Fucking will appear condomless and Raging Stallion will add extra footage containing the unedited scenes to prove that condoms were used. Yet viewers of High Definition discs will still be able to see the condom. This new scheme will not take place in all scenes because it would be too time-consuming to edit every scene. But condom invisibility is the direction Raging Stallion is taking. Below shots are scenes for the upcoming Mirage, which appear condomless.

I recently watched Lucas Entertainment’s epic La Dolce Vita. Michael Lucas swore a few years ago that he wouldn’t hire actors who have performed in bareback movies and was commited to safe sex. In a few scenes, including my favorite between Brad Star and Ray Star, they swallowed each others’ cum at ejaculation.

I respect both of these studios’ commitment to safe sex which is integral for their perfomers’ well-being but also sends a message to viewers that condoms still need to be part of sex for gay men. However, I am concerned that Raging Stallion’s invisible condoms and Lucas’ swallow scenes will mislead viewers to engage in bareback and high risk sex with the mentality that “if pornstars can do it, so can I.” And is this the beginning of the end of safe sex in even mainstream porn?

I am honestly concerned these behaviours may lead to risky sex amongst the gay population, something we cannot afford unless there is a cure for HIV and other STDs.

Competitive bodybuilder Chad Ray Martin has been contacted for private posing and the quoted rate was $750. This Junior USA champions 3rd place winner was recently on the August 2006 cover of bodybuilding magazine Muscle & Fitness.

To be honest, $750 for muscle worship is a very high price considering he only allows vanilla worship but nothing overtly erotic. Many pornstars with amazing bodies have started to reduce their rates in the past six months from $300 to $250.

Jason Sechrest Revolts

Jason Sechrest of JasonCurious.com parted ways with Micky’s nightclub as host of the long-running “Cocktails with the Stars” weekly meet-and-greet. (Cybersocket editor Scott Boardman took over.) There were intimations that he’d start up a new porn-oriented gabfest somewhere in WeHo and a few beans were spilled here and there.

Now comes official word that Mr. Sechrest will host “The X Show” at Rage nightclub in West Hollywood every Tuesday from 7:30 - 9:30pm. A press release burbled that “The X Show” will borrow its format from The Tonight Show and that Mr. Sechrest’s actual set will be provided by none other than Bobby Trendy Designs (Mr. Trendy, by the way, has a splashy cameo in Falcon’s THE VELVET MAFIA). Entertainment will range from “stripteases to singing to stand-up comedy.” There will be no cover charge, either.

The debut show November 7th will feature Mark Dalton and comedian Bruce Vilanch; the following week on November 14th it’s Hot House Entertainment night with the stars of their newly released JUSTICE, Shane Rollins and Jordan Vaughn with Sister Roma of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Future guests in November include Zeb Atlas, Brent Corrigan, gossipmeister Perez Hilton and Bobby Trendy.

Micky’s “Cocktails with the Stars” is held every Thursday; no conflict there. But Rage nightclub is, oh, about 500 yards down Santa Monica Boulevard from Micky’s. Oh, man. There’s gonna be a catfight. I just know it.

Brent Corrigan Legal Woes

Brent Corrigan’s blog is one of my daily reads. Besides drooling over his great looks and body, this young ambitious pornstar has some really eloquent and revealing posts. Who would’ve thought a 19 year old has such as great head on his shoulders.
Brent Corrigan needs help
Brent Corrigan is currently embroiled in some legal woes steming from his porn beginnings at the tender age of 17. Brent was first employed by Cobra Videos whose owner had convinced him into shooting even though he was underage. After a few films, Brent finally left Cobra on very bad terms. Cobra has since engaged in legal action for breach of contract and regarding the name “Brent Corrigan” which the company claims it has the rights to. This was why Falcon marketed him as Fox Ryder in its new release, Velvet Mafia. Cobra even recently trademarked the name, making it illegal for young Brent to accept subscription payments on his site and risking losing the domain altogether.

The young buck is even considering the possibility that he may lose the right to “Brent Corrigan” and says he will utilise his real name, Sean Lockhart, in the future.

Falcon Exclusive Derrick Vinyard has suddenly quit the porn business.

In late September, he was due to appear on Jason Sechrest’s radio show, “The Young And The Curious” on KSEX Radio but didn’t show up the last minute as he notified that has left the business and is no longer making any appearances. Angel Benton was called in as a last minute subsitute.

Derrick Vinyard entered the porn business in 2005 as Falcon Exclusive and starred in Cross Country Part 1 & 2, Driver, Up All Night, Beefcake, Spokes 3, The Velvet Mafia, and From Top to Bottom. His MySpace proifile has been deleted as well.

Buckshot Men on Tim and Roma

I just watched the latest Tim and Roma show with real-life boyfriends Danny Roddick and Alex Chandler. The two Buckshot Men discuss a host of topics, their relationship, the recent move to San Francisco, and shooting their first film Hard Studies. Director Kristofer Weston was on set as well describing how the couple performed marvelously for Hard Studies and their upcoming September release, Boot Black Blues. I only wish I was that lucky in college.

Amateur porn has proliferated over the past few years starting with Sean Cody around 2002. Big amateur sites now include Randy Blue, ChaosMen and Men at Play etc. A new trend in that started a year ago has been the crossover by pornstars between amateur and traditional porn. It began with the rise of Mason Wyler (MySpace profile) who first shot for Randy Blue, but currently does numerous films for Randy Blue, Titan, and Falcon as well. A surprising change was when Titan Exclusive, Cole Ryan (MySpace profile), stripped for Randy Blue a few weeks ago. If you’re into Men, don’t miss Maxx Diesel, Mark Wolf or Edu Boxer at Men at Play.

American Law 2257

The US government is approving The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act H.R. 4472 signed into effect by President G. Bush. The act’s intention is to protect children against sexual exploitation. Yet, one detail buried in the law now makes Secondary producers Primary producers thus held responsible for records of their subjects on their website. Prior to this, only Primary producers were required to maintain identification of their models.

Public dating sites will thus require users posting nude pictures to have model releases containing users’ name and birthdate, an impossibility. Sites such as BigMuscle.com are now in precarious positions on fulfilling web surfers’ needs and obeying the new law. Their options are to remove all nude photos and/or obtain requirement documentation for each photo as outlined by this new law.

There is currently a court case pending by the Free Speech Coalition fighting against 2257. Members of the Free Speech Coalition are exempt from inspection until a decision by the court has been handed down.

The government has already started inspections of companies checking compliance for the first time in about 12 years for the current 2257 regulations. One of the first visits by the FBI was the offices of straight porn Diabolic Video to check the company’s records in accordance with the recordkeeping regulations of 18 U.S.C. 2257, according to Diabolic owner Greg Allan. Diabolic passed with flying colours.
